Did you know that you can see Puffins in Norway? The Puffin season is between mid-April to early August. We went in the beginning of July. To see the puffins, you’re going to start by making your way to Runde island. On the map below, you will see Runde on the left side of Norway, north of Bergen. The closest bigger city to Runde Island is Ålesund which is 1 hour and 45 minutes away. However, we came from a really popular town to visit, Stryn, and it was about a 1 hour and 40 minute drive.

We arrived at the parking lot around 7pm. Puffins leave out to the sea every morning to catch fish for their little ones, and then return between 6-8pm. So the best time to see them is in the evening.
This is the hike on AllTrails: Kaldekloven – Lundeura

It’s 2.8 miles out and back with 725 feel in elevation gain. The AllTrails directions take you right to the parking lot and from there the beginning of the hike is along side the road until you get to the path the goes up the mountain.

Some parts did get a little steep but as you continue the climb, the views get incredible. Overall it was a fun and relatively easy hike. Just make sure you watch out and try not to step in all the sheep poop that’s on the trail. Eventually you’ll make your way to these beautiful cliffs that overlook the ocean. It is a great place to stop and take some pictures or just take in the view.

There are a few paths you can venture off on, but it’s a pretty open/grassy area and you will notice that most people are following the path towards the left where the puffins will be. The AllTrails map will also lead you in the right direction.
Just a short walk longer, you will come to an area that will probably be packed with photographers all trying to capture some pictures of these beautiful birds. Everyone is so respectful and quiet here. Definitely make sure to try and be very quiet too.

When we got there, so many puffins were hanging out in the grass by us and flying around. Some had fish in their mouths and others were carrying grass for their nests. It was so much fun to watch them and snap some pictures of these cute birds.

Not only do you get to see so many puffins but the views here are just stunning. This was such a memorable experience.

I highly recommend planning this experience into your Norway trip if you’re visiting during puffin-season.
